How we source, verify, and present treatment facility data — and what this site is (and isn't).
Our Mission
RehabCentersGuide is an independent directory that makes SAMHSA's publicly available treatment facility data easier to find, filter, and use. We don't add opinions, ratings, or endorsements — we surface the same verified government data that SAMHSA publishes, organized for faster search.
Our goal is simple: when someone needs to find a rehab center that accepts Medicaid, serves veterans, or offers residential treatment in their city, they should be able to find that information in under a minute — not buried in a government database.
Data Source
Primary source: SAMHSA's National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services (N-SUMHSS), published annually by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
API: All facility data is fetched via FindTreatment.gov — SAMHSA's official public API. We do not scrape, estimate, or editorially modify any facility information. What you see is what SAMHSA publishes.
What's included: Facility name, address, phone number, treatment type (substance use, mental health, dual diagnosis), service setting (outpatient, residential, inpatient, detox), accepted insurance and payment types, and special population programs (veterans, women, adolescents, etc.).
What's not included: Patient reviews, ratings, pricing, wait times, or bed availability. That information is not in SAMHSA's dataset and we do not fabricate it.
Methodology
Data freshness: Our site is rebuilt automatically from the SAMHSA API every time we deploy. SAMHSA updates its national directory annually (typically in Q1 each year). We rebuild the site each time SAMHSA publishes new data.
Geographic coverage: We generate a page for every U.S. city with 3 or more SAMHSA-listed facilities. This covers approximately 1,500–2,000 cities across all 50 states and Washington D.C.
Map data: Facility coordinates (latitude/longitude) are sourced directly from the FindTreatment.gov API — SAMHSA's own geocoded data. We do not independently geocode addresses. Maps are rendered using Mapbox.
Filtering: Insurance types, treatment settings, and special programs are parsed from SAMHSA's standardized service code system and displayed as searchable filters. No editorial judgment is applied to categorization.
No paid placements: Facility listings are not ranked, boosted, or suppressed based on payments. All facilities in the SAMHSA database appear in our directory.
Limitations
We cannot verify current availability. A facility listed in our directory may have closed, changed services, or stopped accepting certain insurance since SAMHSA's last survey. Always call the facility directly to confirm current information.
We are not a referral service. We do not match patients to facilities, assess clinical appropriateness, or recommend specific centers. For personalized referrals, call SAMHSA's National Helpline at 1-800-662-4357.
We do not provide medical advice. Nothing on this site constitutes medical advice, clinical guidance, or treatment recommendations. Decisions about substance use treatment should be made with qualified healthcare providers.
Data may be incomplete. Some facilities choose not to participate in SAMHSA's survey or may not report all services. The absence of a facility from our directory does not mean it is not a legitimate treatment provider.
